I am the kind of person who really loves giving gifts…like, REALLY really loves it! The holidays are the perfect opportunity to take some time to think about my friends and family and come up with something totally unique and personalized for them. I don’t always make my gifts by hand (once you’ve figured out the perfect gift for someone, it can sometimes be found in a store), but I love to personalize my gifts before wrapping them up and gifting them.

This is where my Cricut Maker comes in super handy! Not only are there tons of handmade gift ideas you can make with your Cricut, but you can also totally personalize store-bought items to add an extra special touch. If you’re looking for some Cricut Christmas gift ideas to make, or just ways to personalize a gift that’s already great, check out the list below!

Hi thank you for providing a very informative site. I am looking to purchase a Cricut. I have a couple of questions.
    1) can you re-use the same cutting mat and does it eventually need to be replaced if the answer to part A is yes?
    2) if you have (hypothetically) used a piece of vinyl to cut a carrot out of. Can you re- use the remainder with your next project and is there a way to tell the machine the area to cut on the already used vinyl

Sorry for the super slow response! Yes, you can definitely reuse the same cutting mat again and again. Eventually you might need to replace the mats as the adhesive wears off or as your blade slowly makes little cuts into it and it wears out. How often you have to do that really depends on how often you use the machine and what types of things you cut. But I use my machines almost every day and I probably replace my mats about once a year.

As for reusing the remainder of a piece of vinyl, there are a few ways to do this. The easiest way is to just position the next thing you want to cut inside of the software so that it will cut on the unused part of the vinyl. When you go to cut something, on the Preview screen you will see a big preview of what your cut out mat will look like, and you can click and drag the shapes around to different places on the mat. Another option is called SnapMat which is something you can do with your phone. People use this a lot when cutting out fabric with specific designs, but basically you use your phone to take a picture of your material on the actual mat, and then it uses that photo as the mat preview image in the Preview screen. Then you can move your shape around so it avoids the already cut out area.
